Last week we launched a section with the intention of creating a Spotify playlist that contained all the songs about windows that we could collect. We start with flamenco (and we already have a second part coming soon), this week we have to focus on singer-songwriters, those musicians who write, compose and sing their own songs. For them, windows have always been an important source of inspiration when composing and today we collect the five best melodies that contain in their lyrics some reference to the world of windows.
– It may be (Conchita)
Conchita released this single in 2008 as part of the album "Nothing else". Anyone would think he was doing an advertisement for Grupo Afandecor: «This time it's a window, very solid, very strong and with views of the sea». Now he has released a new album «Trip» in which she narrates her difficult path to motherhood, in which she spent three days in a coma after giving birth. We are happy to see that Conchita, a reference for author songs in Spain, is well and continues to delight us with her compositions.
And they say that
If one door closes another opens, I don't know
bigger, prettier and easier than yesterday
easier than yesterday...
And this time
I think that instead of a door there is a window
very solid, very strong and with sea views
with sea views
– Living Will (Ismael Serrano)
The protest song has been a very prolific genre among singer-songwriters and Ismael Serrano may be one of the great representatives. In this song released in 2008 and later recorded as part of the live album “Still”, Ismael Serrano claims the right to a dignified death.
You have to have
Open the windows and let me go
May the night not hurt.
You will fire me and I will burn into a star.
– And Now (Joaquín Sabina)
With 17 albums behind him, Joaquín Sabina is undoubtedly one of the great references in music at a national and international level. In 1999, along with the very famous composition "19 days and 500 nights", he released this song with references to windows. Such an extensive discography could not omit the metaphor of the windows. Continuing with his tradition as a gallant, he intended to "climb up to the window" of his beloved. A declaration of intentions.
Now that, almost always, I feel like
To climb to your window
And take off the mask
Now that the senses
They feel without fear
– I do nothing but think about you (Joan Manuel Serrat)
And if we talked about myths, we couldn't forget Joan Manuel Serrat. A true institution among singer-songwriters and melodic poets. As part of the album "En transit" he presented this song in which he demonstrated all his influences from various genres and authors.
I looked out the window and ran away
With a girl who was riding a bicycle
I was distracted by a neighbor who also
He kept scratching his head
– Suffer like me (Albert Plá)
We finish the weekly compilation with one of the singer-songwriters most attached to the genre and its protest nature in Spain. The Catalan takes his personal style to the extreme, making his compositions some of the most recognizable on the entire national scene. It's a pleasure to be able to enjoy this genius who also remembered the windows in this song from 1995.
I want you to look out
Hourly
Like a prisoner peeking out
through your window
